New Tehri is the headquarters of Tehri district situated in the state of Uttarakhand. The new Tehri was formed due to the sinking of the old Tehri in the early 21st century. It looks very beautiful when surrounded by mountains from all sides. New Tehri is famous for tourism, so thousands of people come here every year to visit.

By Road- New Tehri is connected by road to major cities of Uttarakhand like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Uttarkashi, and Nainital.  Also, being connected to national highways, New Tehri is easily accessible.

History of New Tehri

Tehri Garhwal is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers. Tehri used to be a small village in ancient times, which was later established as a city by Raja Sudarshan Shah of Tehri Garhwal and declared the capital of Tehri district. Gradually the population of Tehri Garhwal started increasing and turned into a big city.  

Gradually Tehri started developing rapidly and by the end of the 20th century, the construction of Tehri Dam was also completed.  After some time in the early 21st century, the entire Tehri was submerged due to the construction of the Tehri Dam.  

This massive disaster-affected about 100000 people. Everything was submerged in people's houses.  Due to this huge calamity, a new Tehri was built. The people whose houses were submerged in the disaster were given houses and land by the Uttarakhand government in New Tehri.
